Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Ranier, MN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Ranier which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
