Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Robbinsdale, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Robbinsdale that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
