Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Roosevelt, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Roosevelt which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
