Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Round Lake, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Round Lake that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
