Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Royalton, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Royalton which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
