Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Sacred Heart, MN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Sacred Heart that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
