Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Saginaw, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Saginaw that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
