Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Sebeka, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Sebeka which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
