Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - South Haven, MN.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in South Haven that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
