Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Tracy, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Tracy that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
