Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Truman, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Truman which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
