Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Tyler, MN.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Tyler which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
