Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Warroad, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Warroad which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
