Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Wheaton, MN.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Wheaton that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is encouraged.
