Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Young America, MN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Young America which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
