Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Eminence, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Eminence which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
