Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Noble, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Noble which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
