Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Winigan, MO.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Winigan that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
