The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its obligations is the oversight of opioid rehab programs, which are programs that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Council are programs that are officially permitted to give out the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic approval documentation while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of certification that was granted.
