Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Lexington, NC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lexington which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
