The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Minneapolis are programs which are legally allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services aside from medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
