The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch.
