The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Raleigh are programs which are officially allowed to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.
An opioid treatment program can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was given.
