The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Seaboard are programs who are officially allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get ancillary services in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been given.
