The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab facilities in St. Pauls are programs that are officially allowed to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can get their basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification that was granted.
