Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient clinic licensed to dispense the med, which is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is around $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be given in highly structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is about $300 monthly for the generic version of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, that is a drug that reverses the effects of opiates. An individual taking this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is another medication used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it is an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from getting high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
