The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted clients. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment facility can get their initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
