Drug and alcohol treatment services are offered in a broad spectrum of formats, so there is truly something for everyone in Penn. Treatment services can be offered in both an inpatient and outpatient basis, where outpatient treatment services range from 1 or 2 days of treatment per week to intensive outpatient treatment which is delivered daily. Outpatient treatment services range from individual counseling and group counseling, to more advanced psychotherapies to modify behavior and motivate clients to stay sober.
Inpatient and residential rehabilitation is available to those who suffer with more substantial histories of substance abuse, spanning from 30 day programs to 90 day programs. Some programs have what is called a Therapeutic Community model, where participants may stay up to a year in certain situations. The longer the client stays in in rehab and takes advantage of rehabilitation services and a distraction-free environment, the greater their chances of staying clean and being able to do so without requiring that robust system of recovery and support. Services within an inpatient or residential drug treatment center are usually more diverse and will encompass services for addiction but also other co-occurring mental health disorders. Aftercare services are essential even after long-term rehab, and many facilities recommend ongoing participation in the program for a few months until the individual has progressed into a drug free lifestyle.
