One of the outpatient treatment options for individuals in Grant who are struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed centers and doctors are authorized to dispense certain meds to opioid addicted clients, many that are opioid-based themselves and are addictive. In low amounts however, the client doesn't experience being high and also does not experience intense cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug administered for this reason, but there are alternative choices currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an out-patient clinic licensed to dispense the med, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is approximately $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based drug, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But unlike Methadone which is only be administered in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about $300 per month for the generic of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. An individual taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and is priced about $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications aforementioned it's an opioid blocker and isn't an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents someone from getting high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
