Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Alton Bay, NH.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Alton Bay which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is encouraged.
