There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Kearny which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is encouraged.
