There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Mount Royal which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
