There are programs offered in or near Normandy Beach that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
