There are programs available in or near Picatinny Arsenal that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is encouraged.
