Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Ridgefield, NJ.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Ridgefield that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
