Clients referred from the court for drug or alcohol rehabilitation are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to receive rehab instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. Although this is most common with first time offenders, it can happen at any time including while someone is being held in jail. There are different types of rehab programs that offenders may be referred to, and it usually depends on what is available in Rio Grande and the type of drug or alcohol they'll need treatment for.
There are treatment programs that work exclusively with the courts to treat this explicit type of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. Additionally, there are also private drug recovery centers that may be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of recovery method that the client needs or wants that a state-funded facility can't fulfill. The client's legal representation can present such alternatives to the judge for acceptance. There are even addiction rehabilitation centers that provide services from the jails and prisons themselves, whereas clients are often in a better position for early release or other leniencies when enrolling in addiction rehabilitation services while serving their sentence for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
