Clients referred from the court for substance abuse treatment are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to try their hand at treatment instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is most common with first time offenders, it can occur at any point such as while the defendant is already incarcerated. There are various types of programs that criminal justice clients may be referred to, and it usually all depends on which programs are local to West Berlin and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.
There are recovery programs that work directly with the criminal justice court system to administer to this explicit group of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are offered at little or no cost to the client. There are also private drug treatment programs that can be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of recovery method that the person requires or prefers that a state-funded program can't provide. The client's legal representation can propose such options to the judge for approval. There are even addiction rehab programs that provide services from the correctional facilities themselves, where clients are sometimes in a better position for early release or other leniencies when engaging in addiction treatment services while serving their sentence for a drug related offense or a DUI/DWI.
