The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab programs in Miami are programs who are officially allowed to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get auxiliary benefits in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation facility can get their basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been granted.
