Crisis Intervention Team - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Rio Communities, NM.

A crisis event, for example a person struggling with the tragic effects of a mental health issue like a drug or alcohol addiction, calls for an intervention directed by professionals who can help get them the help they so desperately need before it's too late. A Crisis Intervention Team in Rio Communities is a form of community monitoring which calls upon and activates law enforcement, healthcare, and other concerned agencies as well as family members to assist addicts in crisis. This begins with the training and education of law enforcement officers, healthcare providers, and other contributing team members in the community so they know how to respond and effectively work together during such a crisis. There are programs offered to train law enforcement officers and 911 emergency operators for example, which includes 40 hours of training in collaborating with the mental health professionals they will be working with during the crisis, learning verbal de-escalation skills so that they can approach and resolve the crisis without it developing into a potentially violent or aggressive encounter, etc.

In many cases, Crisis Intervention Teams are used as a means of jail diversion. Meaning, being able to appropriately respond to what is really meant to be a health disturbance and not a crime helps keep individuals having a mental health crisis out of jail and where they should be, in a hospital or treatment setting receiving help. This also keeps individuals with mental health issues out of prison where they do not have access to adequate mental health therapy and resources to effectively handle their disorder, such as a substance abuse disorder. In lieu of jail, those in crisis can receive behavioral therapies, counseling, medication and other mental health services to rehabilitate them. This not only benefits the person in crisis, but also all of society because it costs more to incarcerate someone with a mental health disorder in prison than it does to properly treat them in a mental health recovery program.
