Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Canisteo, NY.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Canisteo which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
