If someone is getting outpatient detoxification they must go to the center helping them through detox every day or at least five days a week in most situations. Outpatient detoxification services are either delivered in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for someone who must maintain a regular work or school routine. Some programs may also provide options to participate in treatment in either normal outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to improve detox services and try to prevent relapse.

A standard amount of time clients participate in outpatient detox is approximately 7 days. Some programs use medication assisted detoxification methods while others provide medication free detox treatement. There are times when meds are necessary to prevent life threatening withdrawal problems, like with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are at times a problem. Otherwise, medical staff at the program help clients manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are detoxified and balanced.

While outpatient detox in New York is more flexible for apparent reasons, a serious disadvantage is that people are at a greater risk of falling back into addiction due to the access they maintain to drugs. Ideally, individuals will transition into a full rehabilitation program to address the reasons for their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detox is complete.
