Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Perkinsville, NY.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Perkinsville which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
