Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Amsterdam, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Amsterdam that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
