Crisis Intervention Team - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Continental, OH.

A crisis situation, such as a person struggling with the tragic repercussions of a mental health disability like a drug or alcohol addiction, calls for an intervention by a team of professionals who can help get them the help they need before it's too late. A Crisis Intervention Team in Continental is a form of community monitoring which calls upon and activates healthcare, law enforcement and other relevant agencies as well as family members to assist individuals in crisis. This begins with the training and education of law enforcement officers, healthcare providers, and other relevant team members in the community so they learn how to react and effectively work together during such a crisis. There are training programs offered to train law enforcement officers and 911 emergency dispatchers for example, which includes 40 hours of training in collaborating with the mental health professionals they will be working with during the crisis intervention, learning verbal de-escalation techniques so that they can approach and resolve the crisis without it developing into a potentially violent or aggressive incident, etc.

In many instances, Crisis Intervention Teams are used as a means of jail diversion. Meaning, being able to appropriately respond to what is really meant to be a mental health crisis and not a crime keeps people having a mental health crisis out of jail and where they should be, in treatment and receiving help. This also keeps people with mental health issues out of prison where they do not have access to adequate mental health therapy and resources to appropriately handle their disorder, such as a substance abuse disorder. Instead of jail, individuals in crisis can receive counseling, behavioral therapies, medication and other treatment to rehabilitate them. This not only helps the person in crisis, but also the entire community because it costs more to keep someone with a mental health disorder in prison than it does to treat them in an appropriate mental health program.
