If a person is receiving outpatient detoxification they travel to the center helping them with their detoxification daily or at minimum five days per week in most situations. Outpatient detox is either done in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for a person who needs to keep a regular work or school routine. Some facilities may also offer options to receive detox treatment in a choice of normal outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detoxification services and help prevent a relapse.
An average amount of time individuals remain in outpatient detoxification is approximately 7 days. A number of facilities use medication assisted detox methods while others provide medication free detox treatement. At times when medications are needed to prevent life-threatening withdrawal problems, as is the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are sometimes an issue. Otherwise, medical staff at the program help clients manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are detoxed and balanced.
While outpatient detoxification in Cuba is more adaptable for apparent reasons, a very severe drawback is that people are at a higher risk of relapse due to the access they maintain to drugs and alcohol. Ideally, clients will transition into a comprehensive treatment program to address the causes of their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is finished.
