If a person is getting outpatient detoxification they must go to the center helping them with their detoxification daily or at least five days per week in most situations. Outpatient detox services are either done in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for someone who needs to keep a regular work or school routine. Some programs also offer ways to participate in detox treatment in either normal outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detox services and relapse prevention help.
A standard time individuals remain in outpatient detox is about seven days. A number of programs use medication assisted detox approaches while others provide drug free detox services. At times when meds are needed to avert deadly withdrawal symptoms, like with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are sometimes an issue. Otherwise, staff at the center help individuals handle their emotional, psychological, and physical symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are detoxed and stabilized.
While outpatient detoxification in East Palestine is more flexible for apparent reasons, a severe drawback is that individuals are at a greater chance of relapse due to the access they maintain to alcohol and drugs. Ideally, individuals will transition into a log-term or short-term recovery facility to address the reasons for their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is finished.
