Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Holland, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Holland that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
