Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - South Charleston, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in South Charleston that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
