Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - West Salem, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in West Salem which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
