Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Wingett Run, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Wingett Run that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
